This book locates Nigeria's relationship strategies within subaltern studies and provides a refreshing insight into the half-a-century diplomatic agitation by Nigeria as an underdog state. It re-engages this trajectory within the context of identity challenges and the centripetal and centrifugal forces that intersected the country's friendship strategies; interrogating it as typical evidence of what it conceptualises as the underdog phenomenon – a congregation of inter-state relationship realities that set the nature of interaction for 'Third  World' states that emerged as sovereigns from the second half of the twentieth century and sustained their subordinate and subaltern status in the global system.
