The Example of Shakespeare was the first of its kind, a collection of criticism by an African writer in the 20th century, commenting on the new literature then in the very act of creation by his contemporaries and himself. It remains seminal, and is presented here for a new generation of readers, along with later essays, some inaugural lectures and others, rare public interventions on political occasions, to many, regrettably too few.

'The title... "The Example of Shakespeare" is at once political and literary. It connects the tradition of the analysis of Shakespeare's imagery with foundations of African literary scholarship - that is, the image of the African in European literature, with the problem of the appropriate model for language and characterization in the new African literature. The [Caliban] essay shows Clark's clear perception of the intermediary role of the English language in Africa's cultural productions, as in its commercial transactions. The relevance of this essay has endured not only for its implications for creative writing, but because it extends the debate on the use of European languages by African writers.'
