Animal Husbandry for Senior Secondary Schools is designed to cover the three-year senior secondary schools trades curriculum developed by the Nigerian Educational Research Development Council (NERDC) to meet the key targets of the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS).
The series deals with specific ways of rearing some common farm animals. The rearing of poultry for eggs and meat, rearing of rabbits, goats and cattle for beef and leather and a host of other food animals are not left out in the books.
The series provides the basis for theoretical knowledge on the best way (s) animal products can be produced optimally in the practical field. It also highlights common health challenges of livestock and provides some common ways of handling some of these disease conditions
In order to introduce a holistic presentation of the subject matter of animal husbandry to learners at these levels, the thematic approach to content organisation as recommended by NERDC has been adopted.
Generally, the books are written in simple language while most of the technical or scientific words are well defined so that a student can read it without the use of Agricultural Science Dictionary.
The activities and revision questions introduced at the end of each chapter will help in sharpening students’ understanding of what is being taught and also assist teachers in their assessment of students’ achievement. Each book in the series is accompanied by a Workbook and a Teachers’ Guide.
The series is written by experienced animal scientists.
