CHUKWUEMEKA IKE
CHUKWUEMEKA IKE, an Honorary Fellow of the City
and Guilds of London Institute, was born on 28 April
1931 at Ndikelionwu in Eastern Nigeria. He studied at
Government College, Umuahia, University College, Ibadan
(both in Nigeria), and Stanford University Palo Alto,
California, USA. He has at various times been Schoolmaster,
University Registrar, Provincial Refugee Officer (during
the Nigeria/Biafra War), and, from January to November
1970, Chairman of the Planning and Management
Committee which reopened and managed the affairs of
the war ravaged University of Nigeria, Nsukka. From
university administration, he moved into the international
scene as Chief Executive of the multinational West Africa
Examinations Council, with headquarters in Accra, Ghana
(1971-79). He gave up full-time public service in July 1979.
He is married to Adebimpe (née Abimbolu), and they have
a son, Osita.
Expo ’77 is Ike’s sixth novel, the others being Toads
for Supper (1965), The Naked Gods (1970), The Potter’s Wheel
(1973), Sunset at Dawn (1976), The Chicken Chasers (1980), all
published by University Press Plc. He has written a book on
higher education, University Development in Africa: The Nigerian
Experience (Oxford University Press, 1976), as well as short
stories and papers for various publications.
