No matter how long you stay, it’s usually easy to feel at home because of the friendly atmosphere. We stopped by a coffee shop right next to Acela but the place looked a little sketchy (that is NOT a good sign, as the Upper West Side has a lot of sketchy coffee shops, believe me) so we decided to go next door to see what it had to offer.

I visited Acela on Amsterdam Avenue a few weeks ago. In search of a spot to stop for a quick afternoon pick-me-up, we meandered down Amsterdam Avenue. That’s how we got to Acela. The weather was horrible and I was in the mood for my regular NYC ritual – a hot chocolate with whipped cream in one of those tiny little white cups with the green stripe. One of the guys on the trip started to complain about the delay and the lack of food. We were waiting around for a bus that had broken down on the way back to Belfast.

As a girl with some experience, one of the girls took his remark seriously and took control of the situation right away. A bunch of us went to Ireland for a wedding and somehow I found myself in a small town outside of Belfast with a group of people I barely knew and had only just met on the trip over. I found the summer of 1999 to be quite fascinating. She returned a short while later with a large shopping bag filled with bread, deli meat, and a large quantity of chips (crisps).

She then headed off into the streets looking for supplies. She prepared a small meal for us all once we were comfortable on the side of the road. She inquired as to what each person was willing to eat. It was a fun evening and the bread, meat and chips tasted great.
